INEC Shocks Ifeanyi Ubah, Makes U-Turn, Declares Election Inconclusive

Independent National Electoral Commission has declared Anambra South Senatorial election inconclusive over threat to the life of the returning officer. The Returning Officer for the senatorial election, Prof Meshach Umenweke, in a letter written and addressed yesterday to the Anambra Resident Electoral Commissioner, said the election that gave Ifeanyi Ubah the candidate of the Young Progressives Party, YPP, a controversial victory was now declared inconclusive. Umenweke is of the Department of Public and Private Law, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State. The returning officer claimed that he was forced to declare businessman, Ubah the winner to save his life. Copies of the letter made available to journalists in Awka yesterday, read in part, “That there were skirmishes within the compound of the Nnewi North Local Government Area (headquarters) where the results were being collated between the police and some thugs who sought to gain entrance to the area of collation

The Biafra group condemning the attacks against Igbos in Lagos, called on leaders to calm the situation in Lagos to avoid war in the state.National Leader of BNYL . The group further urged the Igbo population in Lagos to wage a fight back on the APC supporters of Yorubas if they refused to calm violence in the state. The statement read in part: “I think it is foolish of Southerners to fight and die for two northern brothers; the Western Leaders should calm the situation in if they don’t want war in Lagos. “Igbos and other tribes from the east should wage a fight back if the attacks continue. “No tribe can push the Igbo away from areas they have occupy and developed.”

Boko Haram Stops Governor Gaidam From Voting In Yobe

Boko Haram terrorists have prevented the Yobe state Governor, Ibrahim Gaidam from voting. This was disclosed in a statement by the Director-General for Press Affairs to the governor, Abdullahi Bego. He said the governor’s decision followed reports of attacks on two communities in the early hours of Saturday. ”It was because of the incident in Gaidam town early in the day, which has already been brought under control and voting is now underway there, the security agencies would naturally seek to reinforce and increase security around the governor for him to travel to cast his vote. “That increased security around the governor will mean that vital security resources that are needed elsewhere in the state would have to be diverted and allocated to the governor”. On Friday night, February 22, the operatives of the Nigeria Police Force intercepted vehicle loaded with bomb along Ughelli-Patani Road Delta State.  It is gathered  that the weapons, which were loaded in a white Toyota Hilux vehicle without a number plate, included 128 pieces of explosives and five pieces of electric detonators have been handed over to the Explosives Ordinance Department (EOD ) of the Police. ASP Chuks Orisewezie, the acting Delta State Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) who confirmed the report while speaking with Igbere Tv newsmen said occupants of the vehicle refused to stop when the police on stop-and-search flagged them. According to ASP Orisewezie; “The occupants later abandoned the vehicle and fled into a bush when they were chased by the Police,” “The van and the explosives are now in Delta State police Command Headquarters Asaba and have been handed over to the Explosives and Ordinance Department (EOD) of the State Police Command.”

The explosions, which were seven, reportedly began at 5:50am and ended at 6am, Igbere Tv learnt. Residents of Maiduguri are currently worried about their safety, as the presidential and National Assembly elections is scheduled to begin in less than two hours. Election : JAMB To Shift UTME Date

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) is considering shifting the date of this year’s examination, an official has said. This development comes as an effect of the postponed 2019 general election. The 2019 presidential election will now hold on February 23 while the state elections will also hold a week later on March 9. This year, the sale or registration forms to all candidates (UTME/DE) including those outside Nigeria, started January 10 and will end February 21. The examination is expected to begin on March 16 and end on 23 at JAMB’s computer-based test centres nationwide. Meanwhile, officials close to the board told PREMIUM TIMES the examination date has been shifted from March 16 to April 16 because of the general elections.

Buratai Reacts To Atiku’s Statement Asking Army To Ignore Buhari’s ‘Snatch and Die’ Order

The Nigerian Army has condemned a statement by the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar asking the Army to disregard President Muhammadu Buhari’s order to “deal ruthlessly” with ballot box snatchers in the rescheduled general elections, Igberetvnews reports.  Responding to Atiku’s Statement, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General, Tukur Buratai said that the statement was unfortunate coming from someone that has been in the highest level of government before. Buratai said the military in general is meant to obey the orders of the Commander-In-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces to the latter. He, however, asked the former vice president not only to withdraw the statement but to also apologise for attempting to invite the Army against what he termed as “constituted authority” it was meant to fully obey. General Tukur Buratai against dragging men of the Nigerian Army into the murky waters of partisan politics, Igberetvnews reports. Ex-bank manager faces N561m fraud trial

Oladimeji Ramon The Police Special Fraud Unit has charged an ex-manager with Ecobank, Ifeanyi Azike, with an alleged fraud of N561m. Azike has been arraigned on two counts before the Federal High Court in Lagos. The police accused him of fraudulently obtaining N150m from one Mr Okafor Kelvin, a customer of the bank, on the claim that he would help him purchase the Federal Government Treasury Bill in Ecobank. The police further alleged that Azike converted a sum of N411m belonging to the bank and its customers to his own. The prosecuting counsel for the police, Daniel Apochi, told Justice Ayokunle Faji last week that Azike committed the offences between 2016 and 2017. He said the defendant acted contrary to sections 1 (1) (a), 15(1)(2) and 15(2)of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud related Offence Act No. 14 of 2006, and was liable to be punished under Section 1 (3) of the same Act.

CBN Injects $210m Into Foreign Exchange Market

The Central Bank of Nigeria has injected $210m into the various segments of the market to sustain its intervention in the Inter-Bank Foreign Exchange Market. CBN’s Director, Corporate Communications, Mr. Isaac Okorafor, made this known in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja. Okorafor said that the apex bank offered $100m as wholesale interventions and allocated $55m to Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). He said that another $55m was allocated to customers requiring foreign exchange for business and personal travels, tuition or medical fees. The director explained that the Tuesday’s interventions were in continuation of the bank’s resolve to sustain the high level of stability in the foreign exchange market. According to him, it is also to continue to ease access to the currency by customers in different sectors. Okorafor said the CBN was optimistic that the Naira would sustain its run against the dollar and other major currencies around the world, considering the level of tr

The Deputy Speaker, Yobe State House of Assembly, Dr. Garba Ibrahim Kurmi is dead. DAILY POST gathered that he passed on, Monday, following a protracted illness. The lawmaker died at the Yobe State University Teaching Hospital Damaturu, according sources close to his family. Until his death, the late Deputy Speaker was a member of the State Assembly representing Fika I (Fika/Ngalda) on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC) and the chairman security, petition and legislative compliance committee of the house, as well as member of various standing committees. He has been in the Assembly since 2011. The deceased during his lifetime could not secure his party’s ticket for the 2019 election, following a loss in the primary election to Alhaji Yakubu Suleiman Malori. A Medical Doctor by profession, the deceased was survived by 2 wives and 8 children.
